South Africa-China celebrating 10 years of diplomatic relations expo

The Republic of South Africa is celebrating the 10th year anniversary of diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.  Diplomatic relations between South Africa and China were established on 1 January 1998. An agreement establishing a Joint Trade & Economic Committee between the Republic of South Africa and the People’s Republic of China was signed on 02 February 1999 by the then Minister Trade and Industry Minister Alec Erwin. The agreement broadly commits the two parties to:

* Strengthen mutually beneficial trade and economic ties between the two countries.

*Raise the profile of South Africa – China relations through the creation of an appropriate institutional mechanism for the strengthening of bilateral economic ties.  Hence creation of the Joint Economic Committee, which meets almost every 12 months.

* Facilitate trade and business networking through joint business participation in trade fairs and exhibitions in each country.

OBJECTIVES OF THE EXPO

* Celebrate 10 years of diplomatic relations between South Africa and People’s  Republic of China

*Showcase South Africa’s technology advancement & innovation, mining capabilities, defence technology, agro-processing, arts and culture and South Africa’s tourism

* Exhibit South Africa’s value-added products and services in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong

* Create awareness of the SA goods and services, to increase exports to Asia

* Enable South African firms to take advantage of export opportunities in the Chinese market

*Increase foreign direct investment into South Africa and increase joint ventures
