Wine makers, grape growers turn out for blessing
ACAMPO — Monsignor Harmon Skillin splashed an industrial trough filled with Sauvignon Blanc grapes with holy water this morning, blessing the 2008 crop and Lodi’s burgeoning wine industry.
The 29th annual Blessing of the Grapes ceremony at Woodbridge Winery in Acampo marks the beginning of the 2008 grape harvest, which experts say promises to provide quality wines.
“We took a hit with some early frosts this year, but the crops have rebounded,” said Woodbridge Winery programs director Larry Pilmaier. “It will be a little light, but the quality is excellent.”
About 150 are grape growers and winery workers attended this morning’s blessing, which took place after the crowd raised a glass in remembrance of famed winemaker Robert Mondavi, who died earlier this year.
