Imported wine make inroad into Zhongshan

More and more imported wine entered Zhongshan, Guangdong province. According to statistics of Zhongshan Customs, from Janaury to July, Zhongshan's imports of wines topped to 300 thousand liters, up 25.3% over last year; and amount to 1.17 million dollars, up 151% on last year. The retail of a single-bottled wine grows fast. In addition, more enterprises joined the ranks of dealing imported wines.

“Imported wines with the volume below 2-liter increased dramatically. From January to July, imports reached 173 thousand liters, up 45.2% and amount to 1.095 million dollars, up 171.1%.”An analysts from Zhongshan Customs said, “the growth of values is much faster than that of volume, showing an high-end trend of Zhongshan wine imports.”

More enterprises in Zhongshan joined the ranks of imported wine business. At present, there are 12 major wine importers in Zhongshan among which 8 are the new ones this year, but the imports of these 8 enterprises accounted for more than two thirds of the whole imports..

For the importing enterprises, the reduction of import tariffs make it much easier for overseas wine brands come to Chinese market , thus stimulated the enthusiasm for the import business. On February 27, Hong Kong scraped 40% tax on wine, making Zhongshan, the nearby city of Hong Kong, wine imports also increased.

Compared to France and other traditional wine producing countries, new world, including the United States, South Africa and other emerging wine-producing countries can provide more inexpensive products. Since Chinese wine consumers have no bias towards these countries’ products, new world wines imports keep growing. From January to July, Zhongshan imported 95,000 liters and 72,000 liters of wine from South Africa and the United States respectively, up 3.8 times and 3.5 times.
