Bordeaux has topped the list of the world's best holiday destinations for wine lovers.

Research carried out by TripAdvisor revealed that the area is one of the world's most popular wine destinations and described Bordeaux as place where the "French passion for food and wine unite for a sensational wine-tasting experience".

Other popular destinations for wine loving holidaymakers include La Rioja in Spain and the Tuscany region of Italy.

Meanwhile, those looking to travel further afield can sample the "superb" wine produced in California's Napa Valley. The area is home to more than 400 wineries, which produce everything from Cabernet Sauvignon to Zinfandel.

Michele Perry, vice president of global communications for TripAdvisor, commented: "In addition to supplying some of the finest wines to the world, these destinations offer visitors outstanding hotels, restaurants and wine tours."

In related news, another recent poll carried out by the travel site named London as the world's top literary city.
