Uncorking the mysteries of wine

Akerley Campus will be offering a workshop on uncorking the mysteries of the wonderful world of wine.

The workshop, Wine Uncorked, is designed to demystify wine and give students the chance to learn more about the history and importance of wine in our culture.

"Wine is an exciting subject of interest and is a life-long learning journey," said Amy Savoury, course instructor. "It is a subject that encompasses so many topics of interest, geography, history, culture and agriculture all packed neatly in a bottle waiting to be uncorked, poured into a glass and explored."

Savoury is a wine enthusiast and passionate advocate for nurturing the wine culture in Nova Scotia. She said that over four evenings, Wine Uncorked will be fun and interactive, with a diverse selection of wines to taste and experience.

The focus will be on fun and interactive hands-on learning and sipping, as beginners and experts alike build a new relationship for life-long wine appreciation.

Nova Scotia's wine industry may be small, but it is mighty, said Savoury, whose thirst for wine knowledge began as an employee of Domaine de Grand Pre working in the capacity of Front of the House management at the estate restaurant Le Caveau.

She obtained her Sommelier certification from the International Sommelier Guild in 2002 and since then has continued to work for the winery as sales and marketing manager.

"I have spent my life on the road spreading the word about the joys of wine throughout our beautiful province," said Savoury. "And interest in wine and our own industry has enjoyed a tremendous growth spurt over the past few years. We now have eight wineries in Nova Scotia."

She has been teaching and developing wine programming for the tourism management students at NSCC and thought it would be fun to design a course for the general public.

"Even if someone learns to become comfortable with ordering a bottle of wine in a restaurant, then the workshop will have done its job," she said.
Certified Sommelier Amy Savoury will be teaching a wine workshop at the Akerley Campus next month.
