SDSU Offers Business

  San Diego State University's College of Extended Studies will offer three courses in its professional certificate in the business of wine program during the fall semester.

Certificate program

  This certificate program has helped prepare numerous students to work in wine-related occupations both locally and elsewhere.

  Most classes are held at restaurants and wineries to give students a feel for the behind-the-scenes workings in the popular wine business.

  Guest speakers from the wine industry offer expertise in each course.

Who is the program for?

  The certificate series is targeted to:

    * Restaurant managers
    * Owners
    * Entrepreneurs
    * Winery employees
    * Event planners
    * Bartenders
    * Bar managers
    * Distribution and retail sales employees
    * Wine enthusiasts
    * Anyone interested in moving into hospitality careers

  Students must be 21 years of age to register for this program.

  Courses available

  Exploring Wine

    * Mondays, Sept. 8 through Oct. 6
    * 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.
    * This course takes students on a journey around the world of wine. Topics covered include history, grape varietals, viticulture, language and labeling, and tastings.

  Wine Business Strategies

    * Tuesdays, Sept. 23 through Oct. 14
    * 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.
    * This course starts with an overview of current wine market imperatives and trends. Both the restaurant/retail and winery market segments will then be examined through a specific case study approach.

Wine Making Behind the Scenes

    * Saturday, Oct. 11 (all-day at a Temecula winery)
    * This course will give true insight into the way wine is made by visiting a winery. Students will learn "from grape to table," including the philosophy, manufacturing and operations of the wine business. .
