Wine tasting a community affair in Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- You don't have to know the difference between a merlot and cabernet to enjoy this night of wine tasting. Sponsored by Binghamton's Chamber of Commerce, the event helps bring a new experience to locals.

"I'm really glad that they have this stuff going on still. It really makes it great for everyone to get out and it makes me want to get involved in the community," said Frank Macaluso, a Binghamton resident.

The wines themselves are provincial as well. There were 14 wineries represented, all from New York State, which is trying to raise its image du vino.

Bring your decanters and tasters cup, it was time again for the annual Broome County Chamber of Commerce's night of wine tasting. Friday marked the fifth year for the event, which brings locals and local wineries face-to-face. Our amateur sommelier Neil St. Clair was there and has his critique of the evening's festivities.

"We certainly hope that when people sample the New York State wines, they'll buy New York State wines," said Lou Santoni, the Chamber of Commerce's interim president.

Even with a down economy, more than 600 people shelled out $25 for the sold out event. Most veteran attendees weren't surprised.

"I don't think the economy's hit everyone quite yet, so I still think people are still trying to get out there and make use of what they've got going on," said Rachel Francisco, a wine consultant.

From Rieslings to the Rhone Valley, you get a really great sampling of New York State wine. But how do you tell the difference between one glass of wine and the next? Stephen Hall from King Ferry winery was kind enough to help explain a bit of wine tasting 101.

"First, you take your glass and swirl it, put your nose to it, smell it and then take a taste and you'll get a front and back taste and it's delicious," explained Hall.

The event also featured live music and food from several local restaurants.

The money raised Friday will help the Chamber support local businesses.
