Consumers can take world tour with specialty-wine selections
Last spring, both wine-consumer enthusiasm and Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board specialty store-employee morale sagged under a gloomy pall. The stores' barren retail shelves recalled the Stalinist era's infamous consumer shortages, with no apparent relief in sight.
At the low point, Jim Short, director of marketing, and Tony Jones, division chief of product management and pricing, urged patience.
They promised a new, focused strategy to provide better selection, quality and pricing across the specialty-wine program.
Change unfurled slowly, but gained momentum by September. Now, leading into the holidays, the quality and variety of specialty-store wine offerings fulfill the pledged improvements admirably.
On recent visits to stores at Penn Circle in East Liberty; Oxford Centre, Downtown; McIntyre Square in Ross; and the Waterworks in Pittsburgh, near Aspinwall, the profusion of terrific wine buys stacked out in aisles actually made navigating difficult. Numerous new Chairman's Selections also hold prominent stack-out positions at the front of the stores.
Specialty wine coordinators say the fun has only started. Behind the scenes in backroom storage, hundreds of new wines await deployment. The inventory's sheer volume challenges specialty wine coordinators to educate consumers. But judging from recent conversations, new optimism has replaced last spring's slumping spirits.
Specialty-wine choices range across virtually every conceivable style and wine-producing region. Take a world tour enjoying these tasty selections:
Austria
2007 Laurenz V "Friendly" Grüner Veltliner, Niederösterreich, Austria (Specialty 26676, $12.99): This is a regional offering made from grapes grown in Niederösterreich ("Lower Austria") on terraces along the castle-studded Danube River. Pleasant citrus and floral aromas lead to lively lime and grapefruit flavors with refreshing mineral notes. Crisp acidity balances a soft, yet dry, finish. Try it with mild, creamy cheeses and figs. Highly recommended.
Italy
2006 Pio Cesare, Cortese di Gavi, Italy (Specialty 25334, $16.99): Bracing grapefruit and melon aromas lead to rich citrus flavors, lively acidity and mineral notes with this well-made northern Italian white wine. The elegant dry finish pairs well with Fritto Misto di Mare -- lightly breaded, fried seafood including baby squid, octopus, shrimp, sardines and anchovies. Recommended.
Note: Pio Boffa, great grandson of Pio Cesare's founder, will visit Pittsburgh this week. As honorary chairman of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's "Passion for Wine" event on Saturday at the PPG Wintergarden, five of Mr. Boffa's wines will be featured. Details: www.cff.org/Chapters/wpa.
2006 Mastroberardino, Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Rosso, Italy (Specialty 24191, $11.99): Made from piedirosso grapes grown on Mount Vesuvius' slopes overlooking the breathtakingly beautiful Bay of Naples, this wine's ruby, orange-tinged color offers fruity plum aromas with floral and spicy hints. Moderate, smooth tannins frame the lively cherry and spice flavors carrying through the well-balanced, dry finish. Try it with manicotti with red sauce. Recommended.
Portugal
2006 Cortes de Cima, Chaminé, Vinho Regional Alentejano, Portugal (Specialty 26431, $11.99): This southern Portuguese red blend of Aragonez (also known as tempranillo) of 44 percent, 30 percent syrah, and other native varieties, has light-purple color with intensely fruity black cherry aromas and peppery notes. Ripe, juicy cherry and plum flavors with smoky, earthy notes open to soft tannins and bright acidity through a fruity, dry finish. Try it with spicy chorizo sausage. Highly recommended.
France
2006 Chateau Planères de Saint Jean, Côtes du Roussillon "Cuvée Nicolas de Lise," France (Specialty 18824, $9.99): Ripe grenache grapes lay this southern French red blend's foundation. Plum and herbal aromas lead to fruity flavors with lively acidity and soft tannins through a dry finish. Try it with roast pork loin. Recommended.
California
2007 Shannon Ridge Vineyard and Winery, Wrangler Red, Lake County, California (Specialty 14881, $11.99): Since the 1980s, northern California wine country natives Clay and Margarita Shannon have grown superb grapes on the rocky, volcanic soils at high altitudes in rural Lake County about 35 miles north of Napa Valley. This tasty mix of cabernet sauvignon (36 percent), syrah (27 percent), petite sirah (27 percent), zinfandel (6 percent), and barbera (4 percent) recalls the classic California "field blends" -- pure, robust fruitiness of raspberries and plums with peppery notes, lively acidity, smooth tannins, and a well-balanced, food friendly, dry finish. Highly recommended.
