Leasingham cleans up at local wine show
Leasingham Wines was the most successful winery, picking up four of the 11 trophies including Best Wine of Show at the Clare Valley Regional Wine Show on Friday.
The Leasingham Wines 2008 Classic Clare Riesling won three of the four major trophies at the wine show – the Jim Barry Trophy for Best Wine of Show, the Best Riesling of Show Trophy, and the Mick Knappstein Trophy for Best Current Vintage Riesling.
Leasingham Wines also won the Best Vintage Section Cabernet Sauvignon with its 2006 Magnus Cabernet Sauvignon.
The other major trophy, the Carl Sobels Trophy for Best Vintage Section Dry Red, was collected by Knappstein Wines for its 2006 Cabernet Merlot. The same wine won the Best Vintage Section Dry Red Trophy.
The balance of the trophies was picked up by Lawson Wines, Annie’s Lane, Skillogalee Wines, Claymore Wines and Jim Barry Wines.
The trophies were presented at a luncheon attended by 180 people in the main pavilion of the Clare Showgrounds.
International judge Quentin Johnson called on Clare Valley winemakers to take a more proactive role in marketing their products overseas and to put more emphasis on cabernet sauvignon.
