Jekel Vineyards produces solid lineup of wines
Founded in 1972, Jekel is one of the pioneering wineries of California's Monterey wine region. The Monterey region is centrally located on the California coast, approximately 120 miles south of San Francisco.
Jekel Vineyards is producing a solid lineup of wines. All are easy-drinking and provide good quality at a nice price.
My favorite is Jekel Riesling 2007 ($11), a delicious version of this underrated varietal.
It has aromas of rose petal and gardenia, and juicy flavors of peach, apricot and mango. This wine has a touch of sweetness (1% residual sugar), and thus pairs beautifully with spicy Thai, Chinese or Mexican food.
Jekel Chardonnay 2006 ($11) is equally versatile, featuring bright pear and apple flavors and a clean finish without too much oak. Good pairings would include seafood, chicken and cream-sauced pastas.
Jekel Pinot Noir 2006 ($15) has a silky texture, classic cherry-berry flavors and hints of cinnamon. Pinot Noir tends to be pricier than other varietals, and this wine is an especially good value.
Jekel Merlot 2005 ($15) is also a good value, providing ripe black cherry flavors with touches of herbs and spice. Smooth enough to enjoy on its own, this wine also pairs well with hamburgers and pizza.
Jekel Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 ($15) is a deeply colored Bordeaux-style wine that tastes best alongside a well-marbled steak. Its blackberry flavors are accented with hints of tobacco and chocolate, and there is noticeable oak on the finish
