Wine of the Week: Pinot Noir
Searching for a knock-out pinot noir
Wine writer Peg Melnik had a blind tasting this week of pinot noirs -- from elegant to lush. Williams Selyem was the most striking, rating 4.5 stars, but it was too pricey to be our Wine of the Week. The 4-star rated Dutton-Goldfield was chosen instead because it was also a standout and less expensive at $38.
2006 Dutton Ranch, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, $38 ****
An elegant, complex wine that has good acid but still manages to be juicy. Aromas and flavors of black cherry, cherry, herbs and black pepper. Great balance. Long finish.
Others in the mix:
Williams Selyem 2006 Bucher Vineyard, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, $54 **** ½
A striking pinot with a depth of flavors. Rich notes of cherry, spice, toast and a hint of caramel. Complex. Long finish.
Handley, 2006 Mendocino County Pinot Noir, $25 *** ½
Offers a great core of cherry fruit. Has good acidity, yet it also has a fleshy texture. Notes of black cherry, white pepper, coffee and herbs.
Saintsbury Garnet, 2007 Carneros Pinot Noir, $20 *** ½
Earthy, with notes of cherry, sage and spice. Slightly herbal. Better with food.
