ACMC hosts wine fundraiser for cath lab

GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — A glass of wine a day is as good as an apple a day, doctors say.

The Ashtabula County Medical Center tested that medical theory. Sunday, glasses of warm, rich wines from the region’s best vineyards took some chill out of the day at the third annual Tastings of the North Coast

The yearly fundraiser, held at the Lodge and Conference Center at Geneva State Park, supports ongoing improvements, renovations and expansions at ACMC through the ACMC Foundation. This year the wine-infused event helps fund the new Cardiac Catheterization Lab, hospital business development coordinator Sabrina Powers said.

A cardiac catheterization is a specialized study of the heart, which is a significant tool in evaluating and treating heart disease. The Ohio Health Department has identified heart disease as the leading cause of death in Ashtabula County, and Powers said patients have to travel 45 miles or more for a cardiac catheterization.

“The success of this event I think shows that people recognize the need for a heart lab in our county. People want to be a part of such a big development in the community,” she said.

Buccia Vineyards, Chalet Debonne, Ferrante Winery and Ristorante, Grand River Cellars, Harpersfield Vineyard and Winery, the Lakehouse Inn Winery, Markko Vineyard and the Old Firehouse Winery donated bottle after bottle of vino for the fundraiser, which was held in cooperation with the lodge.

Tina Stasiewski, vice president of business development, said the participation of the local vineyards shows the power of the grape and the deep commitment the agriculture industry lends to the community.

“Really I am amazed at how, even in these economically troubled times, the wineries, restaurants, corporations and individual sponsors came forward to donate toward something they really believe in,” she said. “The support has been tremendous.”

Casa Capelli Restaurant, Crosswinds Grille, Horizons at the Geneva Lodge, Saffron Patch and The Sandy Chanty presented samples of their best dishes. Desserts were provided by the Cake and Candy Connection and Guyreino’s Deli.

Sponsors included Community Care Ambulance, Grand River Rubber and Plastics, HAVE Inc., Hospitalists Management, The Illuminating Company, O and P Oil and Gas, Smolen Engineering, Ashtabula Home Decorating, Noteworthy Medical Systems, Security Technologies, and TeamHealth Midwest. More than 30 individual sponsors also participated.
