Take a Texas winery road trip

This weekend is an especially good time for a Texas winery road trip. The "Way Out Wineries" (WOW) will be hosting its third annual holiday event.

WOW's "Holiday Road Trip" takes place Nov. 7-9, with wine tastings, food pairings, door prizes and holiday fun at eight participating wineries.

Each winery will be serving a featured wine paired with a holiday appetizer.

The members of WOW are small family-run wineries. They are wise to work together, because their locations are somewhat off the beaten path.

Near the Metroplex, there is Granbury's Barking Rocks Winery, Bluff Dale's eponymous Bluffdale Vineyards and Meridian's Red Caboose Winery.

Onward toward Abilene and San Angelo, there is Comanche's Brennan Vineyards and another eponym, Rising Star Vineyards.

More toward Austin, there is Bend's Alamosa Wine Cellars and two Lampasas wineries: Pillar Bluff Vineyards and Texas Legato Winery.

Fortunately, WOW information and driving directions are consolidated in one place, at www.wayoutwineries.org. The site also contains links to individual winery Web sites.

Tickets for the "Holiday Road Trip" are $25 per couple and can be purchased from the WOW Web site. Tickets can be redeemed at each winery for the wine and food tasting, along with a souvenir stemless wine glass.

Road trip hours at the wineries will be 10-6 on Friday and Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. Congratulations in advance to folks who collect all eight wine glasses: that's proof of a serious road trip.
