Hong Kong hosts urban winery
Holidaymakers who take flights to Hong Kong now have a new and unusual attraction to visit – the city''s first urban winery.
The establishment, called the 8th Estate Winery, is open now and sells white, red and dessert wine varieties.
Following the abolition of taxes on imported wine by the local government of Hong Kong, the city now has a fully-functioning wine production facility that imports grapes from some of the world''s most famous wine regions.
When the grapes arrive in Hong Kong, they are pressed, fermented, aged and developed in the traditional way to create a variety of types of wine.
As a boutique winery, the 8th Estate will have a limited run of 8,300 cases per year.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board has said the city is set to become the world''s third major wine-trading hub, along with London and New York.
Visitors will be able to take part in tours of the winery with its Italian winemaker, who will personally conduct tasting sessions and answer questions.
