Michigan House passes legislation that would ban wine shipments from retailers

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan wine drinkers no longer would be able to receive wine shipments directly from retailers under a bill approved by the state House.

 

The bill passed the Democrat-led House Thursday, 97-9. It now heads to the Republican led-Senate.

 

The legislation is the latest attempt to change Michigan's wine distribution system.

 

A federal judge in September ruled unconstitutional a state law allowing Michigan retailers to deliver wine to residents but prohibiting out-of-state retailers from doing likewise.

 

The bill would bar all retailers from making the shipments. It doesn't affect wineries. State liquor officials support it.

 

Opponents say the measure would limit consumers' choices and damage in-state vendors while protecting wine wholesalers.
