AUS: Winemakers embrace EU trade deal

The Winemakers' Federation of Australia has welcomed a new wine trade deal between Australia and the EU.

The deal, signed on Monday (3 December), means Australia has agreed to phase out the use of traditional European wine names, such as Champagne, Port or Burgundy.

That is a price worth paying for greater access to the EU market, however, according to the Winemakers' Federation of Australia.

Chief executive Stephen Stachan said that the deal means recognition for all existing techniques used in Australia, as well as a fast-track system for newly developed techniques.

He added: "The agreement will also simplify labeling provisions and a standstill clause has been adopted that prevents the introduction of more restrictive trade measures that could affect the importation of wine."

Australia exports more than A$1.3bn of wine to the EU.
