Wine List for December 7
Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
Chateau Ste. Michelle, 2007 Columbia Valley Gewurztraminer ($9) -- A gewurztraminer that's crisp but still manages to be lush. Notes of jasmine, nectarine and clove.
Anthill Farms, 2006 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir ($32) -- An earthy pinot noir with good acidity. Aromas and flavors of black cherry, anis and mineral. Long finish.
Carol Shelton, 2005 Karma Zin, Old Vine Zinfandel, Russian River Valley ($33) -- A zin with a great concentration of fruit and zesty spice. Notes of blueberry, nutmeg, cinnamon, creamy vanilla and dark chocolate. Rich.
Ravenswood, 2006 Barricia, Sonoma Valley Zinfandel ($35) -- Aromas and flavors of blackberry, black cherry, herbs and spice. Approachable. Zesty finish.
Flora Springs, 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($36) -- A rich cab with soft tannins. It's ready to drink now or could be aged for a few years. Notes of black cherry, blackberry, currant and spice.
