Cheers to Wine

   A huge fan of Merlot myself, I drink it for the tart dry experience, not the many health benefits wine apparently has. Those same researchers that say some chocolates are good for us (dark) prove wine has great health benefits, particularly Red wines. But even if we put those supposed benefits aside wine, red or white contain less calories and usually no fat at all compared to other alcoholic beverages. Put wine up against the lightest beer or cocktail and it’ll win out each time. Generally a serving of wine is between 3.5 and 5 ounces, that contain anywhere from 80 to 180 calories depending on the type and brand.

Now on to the health benefits, both red and white wines are said to increase the chances of good cholesterol levels. However reds contain higher levels of phenolic antioxidants (a class of chemical compounds), these antioxidants keep “bad cholesterol” levels healthy. In addition, they help to reduce blood clotting and both reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. But how much wine is healthy or how much is enough to have an effect on overall health. Most say a glass a day will suffice for women and two for men.

While I understand that for many, wine is a preference but there are ways to enjoy it if you aren’t a connoisseur and can’t tell a Pinot Noir from a Pinot Gregio. For instance, a nice sangria, which is perfect for the holidays or hot summer days. Below is a simple recipe that will thrill guests and offer less than 175 calories per serving.

Christmas Red Sangria
2 bottles fruity red wine
1/2 cup brandy or cognac
1 cup pomegranate juice
1 large pomegranate
1 red Bartlett pear, cored and thinly sliced
1 orange, thinly sliced into rounds
1 cup red grapes, sliced in half lengthwise
1/3 cup honey
1 bunch fresh mint leaves, reserving some for garnish
1 bottle sparkling water (optional)


Combine ingredients except sparkling water in a glass pitcher and let sit at room temperature for one hour. Refrigerate for at least two hours, or overnight. Spoon some fruit into glasses and top with a splash of sparkling water (if using), garnish with mint.
