FORT WORTH — Grand Cru Wines & Gifts, a new independent wine and gift shop in southwest Fort Worth, opened December 27, 2008. The full-service specialty wine boutique offers a broad selection of wines from around the world, a wine bar, and a wide variety of gift and other related merchandise. Prices start at $8 per bottle, with an average price of $25.

The almost 3,000 square-foot wine shop is a dream come true for co-owners Karen and Kayne Chu, who both have long-time careers at Fort Worth-based Alcon Laboratories. The couple first became interested in wine over 10 years ago when they started traveling to wine regions across the U.S., Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and South America. It wasn't long before they started dreaming of opening their own wine shop during their retirement years. Last year, however, they asked themselves, "What are we waiting for?"

The shop's wine bar allows shoppers to experiment with new wines. Open daily, the Grand Cru wine bar features at least 8 different selections by the glass, from small boutique wineries and larger ones, all available at the ideal serving temperature. The selections will change several times per week. The wine store also includes a lounge area and a tasting room that will seat 24 people. The tasting room is available for rent, includes a 51-inch flat screen TV and can be configured several different ways.

In addition to a large selection of wines, Grand Cru also offers wine accessories, gift merchandise, works from local artisans, a wine club, educational sessions and custom gift baskets. Soon, gourmet food products will be added.
