Allow wine sales in grocery stores

In a state budget proposal full of misbegotten ideas to tax the living daylights out of those willing to remain in New York, at least there is an idea with merit: allowing grocery stores to sell wine.

In a pinch, it'll be nice to be able to grab a bottle of wine from the grocery store. Liquor stores will still probably be better, as they are more nimble in terms of purchasing than large grocers. I can think of at least half a dozen very standard products that my local Hannaford can't get. How will it get something from "that new Finger Lakes winery"? They won't. But they probably will have your basic wines.

Just like if you want a really good wrench or firearm, you don't go to Wal-Mart. You go to a real hardware store or a real gun store. If you want a real variety of interesting or local wines, you probably won't find it at the grocery store. Still, it's a nice option to have.

As good an idea as it is, it probably will put some stores out of business. It's important to find a solution that is as equitable as possible for liquor retailers. Mainly, end the constraints on their hours of operation. Also, let them sell whatever they want to stock. If you give them a level playing field, most liquor retailers should be able to compete.
