Alma approves winery permit

ALMA, Wis. — The vineyards atop the Alma bluffs could soon be home to a winery and tasting room.

The Alma City Council granted a zoning conditional-use permit to Danzinger Vineyards LLC of Alma for the winery, which organizers hope will become a tourist stop and popular place for local get-togethers.
The company plans to apply for a building permit this year to construct a 40- by 72-foot structure at S2015 Grapeview Lane, about 500 feet off Hwy. E and across from lands where Danzinger Vineyards grows 7,200 grapevines on 15 acres, said David Danzinger.

The vineyard and winery could produce about 4,000 cases of wine annually, about 7,000 to 8,000 gallons, at full capacity, he said. With a winery tucked under the main structure, the business could include a tasting room, gift shop and room suitable for anniversaries, small weddings and other events.

The city council granted the permit with four conditions, including no overnight camping, facedown light posts, minimum of 20 parking stalls and an 11 p.m. curfew on outdoor music events.

Danzinger, in partnership with his brother, Melvin, and three sons, share thirds in the vineyard company. The proposed building would cost an estimated $225,000 to $300,000 to build, David Danzinger said.

A couple of vineyard terraces will be landscaped near the business facility, and a patio also is planned.

The building will be located on a natural rise in the landscape to showcase a scenic view of the Mississippi River Valley. The event room would be large enough to accommodate bus tours.

The organizers hope the new winery will spark a Mississippi River Wine Trail in which growers on both sides of the river join to promote tourism and visits to local wineries and vineyards.
