Holding your wine glass in style

I had the extreme pleasure of attending the Trust for the National Mall L'Enfant Society Martinis for the Mall event at Teatro Goldini on K St last night.  It was an awesome event!  Not only did I meet some fantastic folks, I also was able to observe the wine drinking habits of the attendees.  I am proud to say that most held their wind glasses rather superbly…but I want to freely give a few pointers about holding a wine glass for those who weren’t in the know:

Finer establishments have 2 separate wine glasses on the table:  a tulip shaped one for red wind and long-stemmed one for white wine.  Once you order your wine, the waiter will leave the appropriate glass on the table for you to use.

You hold a glass of red wine by the bowl.  The heat from your hand releases the flavor of red wine.

Hold a glass of white wine by the stem.  You want to keep the heat from your hand away from the bowl to not disturb the delicate flavor. Also, the white wine glass is designed to highlight the sparkling display of the wine.

Now that you officially know how to hold a wine glass…Enjoy!
