MERSİN - Depicted as a center for high quality wine in writings that date back 2,700 years ago, the Kilikya district, which includes Mersin, is on the way to becoming an important center again with new investment.

"The Mersin University Archeology Foundation conducted intensive research in the Erdemli, Silifke and Tarsus districts to get information about centers of wine production and production techniques and to put what they have learned theoretically into practice," said Ümit Aydınoğlu, assistant professor in the archeology department of Mersin University.

Stating that they had obtained important information about the richness of wine production in the Kilikya district from inscriptions that mentioned wine trading and wine dealers, Aydınoğlu said Kilikya was described as a "reggio," meaning the center of wines with a variety of tastes.

"Why do we not use such techniques today? The reputation of wine made of sultanas was known worldwide in ancient times. Being the center of high quality wine for many years, Mersin still produces the same grapes. If the farmers are supported, Mersin will definitely regain its old popularity with the premium vines it produces."

350,000 tons of grape production annually
"Among the many kinds of grapes, the one known as "Tarsus beyazı," specific to the Tarsus district, is popular in both Turkey and abroad," said Cengiz Gökçel, chairman of the Mersin Chamber of Agriculture.

Stating that the annual grape yield in Mersin amounted to 350,000 tons, Gökçel said the district could attract more wine production plants with a coordinated effort that would increase both revenue and employment.

"The district exported grape concentrates to many European countries, at one time, mainly France. Our grape is a brand in itself, however, we fail to produce wine out of it. The first grapes of the year are cultivated here. Nowhere in the world are grape harvested on May 1. We should take advantage of this," said Ali Ergezer, chairman of the Tarsus Chamber of Agriculture.

"The amount of grapes exported from Mersin is around 150,000 tons. We are proud of the quality and the specific aroma of the Tarsus grape," he added.
