More than $200,000 in federal government funding will help scientists find new ways of taking photos below the earth's surface and improving the taste of beef.

The funding, announced by Science Minister Kim Carr on Monday, will go towards the French-Australian Science and Technology (FAST) Program.

It will be used for 14 French-Australian partnerships which had the potential to harness scientific breakthroughs in a wide array of areas, Senator Carr said.

"As always, there are some particularly smart collaborations, such as research into white wine by two of the best wine-producing countries in the world," he said in a statement.

Some of the funding would also go towards research on Rheumatoid Arthritis, a condition that has no cure and affects more than 200,000 Australians.

The government recently renewed its commitment to the program, through a memorandum of understanding with the French government.
