In the North Dakota Senate, someone may quench their champagne thirst on a wine budget.
North Dakota`s tax on champagne and other sparkling wines is double the levy that`s imposed on regular wine.
On Tuesday the state Senate voted to get rid of the difference.
Under the bill, both wine and champagne would be taxed at 13.2 cents per liter. Sparkling wine is now taxed at 26.4 cents per liter.
The state Tax Department estimates the change will result in a $40,000 decrease in tax collections over two years.
The measure now goes to the North Dakota House.
The bill is SB2416.
