Montalcino is situated to the South of Siena. The town's strategic, hilltop position led to it becoming an important military fortification for Siena.Today, Montalcino is known for the production of one of Italy's most important red wines. The Brunello di Montalcino is a DOCG (denomination of guaranteed and certified origin) wine, the first Italian wine to be awarded the status. It is considered, along with the Barolo, to be the Italian red wine of greatest longevity.
During the Brunello Tour we suggest a visit to the ancient abbey of Sant'Antimo, and the town of Pienza, built during the renaissance according to the wishes of Pope Pio II as 'ideal city'. Pienza is known for the production of an excellent Pecorino cheese.
To see: Montalcino, Pienza, the Abbeys of Sant'Antimo and Monte Oliveto Maggiore, Bagno Vignoni.
