UC to hold viticulture conference Feb. 17

The University of California Cooperative Extension is hosting a viticulture conference Feb. 17 at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts.

The event, called Sonoma County Grape Day, is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and is followed by lunch.

Researchers will present findings on a host of vineyard issues, including the effects of experimental growth regulator CPPU on merlot set; mealy bug management; the impact of rust and bug mites on short shoot syndrome; and canker disease.

The cost is $45 in advance, $50 at the door. Deadline for advance registration is Monday. More information is available at http://ucanr.org/scgrapeday.

Korbel honored by Wine Enthusiast
Korbel Champagne Cellars has been named American Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast magazine. Korbel president and owner Gary Heck accepted the award at the 2008 Wine Star Awards held Jan. 26 in New York.

The magazine stated that "Korbel has achieved something few American wineries have -- not just longevity, but something even more elusive: supreme brand recognition."

The awards recognize leaders in the crafting, marketing and distribution of wine and spirits worldwide. Also nominated were Rodney Strong Vineyards of Windsor, Shafer Vineyards of Napa, J. Lohr Vineyards of San Jose, and Sineann of Newberg, Ore.

Workshop focuses on vineyard spraying
The Sonoma County Winegrape Commission is hosting an advanced employee development workshop on vineyard spraying.

The class, taught in Spanish, will take place from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 14 at Shone Farm, 6225 Eastside Road, Forestville.

Daniel Robledo, of Crop Protection Services, will teach workers about sprayer calibration, and Lampson Tractor will provide equipment for hands-on training.
