Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall promote organic wines in Chile

By Andrew Alderson  2009-3-10 20:57:00

The royal couple will visit the Emiliana vineyard outside the Chilean capital of Santiago, where they will meet Rafael and Jose Guilisasti, two brothers heavily involved in the development of organic wine production in Chile.

Prince Charles is a passionate supporter of organic farming in Britain, including his own farm on his Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire.

The Emiliana vineyard has pioneered organic wine production in Chile, basing production in three different valleys. Its products are exported to 40 countries around the world, including the UK.

The royal couple are on the third day of a 10-day tour of South America. Tomorrow they will fly on to Brazil and, eventually, Ecuador, where they will visit the Galapagos Islands.

Their engagements today start with a visit to the Chilean Naval Headquarters in Valparaiso, where they will meet Admiral Rodolfo Codina, the Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Navy.

They will go aboard the FF Almirante Condell, formerly the HMS Marlborough and one of three Royal Navy frigates sold to Chile by the UK in 2005.

The Prince is taking on an enhanced role as an international statesman because the British Government wants him to do more to promote its key interests abroad, particularly on climate change and the environment.
