AP survey finds most Tenn. lawmakers undecided proposal to allow wine sales in supermarkets
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — An Associated Press survey has found most Tennessee lawmakers remain undecided about a proposal to allow wine to be sold in supermarkets, a strong indication that the measure is unlikley to be voted on this year.
Only 40 percent of the General Assembly's 132 members say they have made up their minds on the issue. And of those who have, a narrow majority say they oppose any change to the current law that restricts wine sales to liquor stores.
Lawmakers' support or opposition toward the proposal does not track along party lines. Many say the measure has drawn heavy e-mail and phone traffic from constiuents.
Opponents are concerned about underage access to wine, the impact on small businesses and general resistance to making alcohol more easily accessible.
