Imagine eating at a restaurant where the former president of the United States frequented. Well, now you can…simply head on over to Kow Kow restaurant on Cicero Avenue in Lincolnwood IL. Kow Kow has been in business since 1949. Yes, you read correctly. It is celebrating its 60th year anniversary. The business started out with carry out only but simply four years later it had a sit down eatery.
The one and only location located on Cicero Avenue is very grand indeed. From the hanging tapestries to the full bar, everything you need for a tremendous meal is right at Kow Kow. You may be wondering, “What kind of food do they serve”? Kow Kow has been and will always remain a Cantonese dining treasure. You may think that you have never tried Cantonese food, think again! Cantonese cooking comes from the region of Guangdong Province in Southern China. Most “Chinese restaurants” are in fact serving Cantonese food. Kow Kow simply forgoes the traditional “Chinese food” sign.
The menu at Kow Kow boasts over a hundred items. The more traditional Chinese food items are available. Sweet and Sour Chicken, Sesame Chicken, Moo Shu Pork, Chop Suey, Egg Foo Young, and many others are served. However, the major differences between traditional Chinese food and Cantonese cooking are the spices. Cantonese cooking is flavored with spring onion, sugar, salt, soy sauce, rice wine, corn starch, vinegar, sesame oil, and other oils. The sauces are light and offer a compliment to the meats and veggies rather than drowning them in sauce. I have tried many dishes and haven’t found one I didn’t like.
However, the real treasure at Kow Kow is their egg rolls. Never will you have a better egg roll. The egg roll consists of a superbly crunchy outer shell and a decadent filling. The filling consists of cabbage, baby shrimp, cubed pork, and other veggies. There is a spicy mustard sauce and a plum sauce (to die for) that accompany the egg rolls. These egg rolls are so good that former President Bill Clinton had them shipped to him at the White House on a regular basis. Don’t pass up the opportunity to try them. Head on over to Kow Kow restaurant and say a big hello to Mr. Moy!
