Rare wines hidden from Nazis sold at UK auction

LONDON (AP) — A British auction house says it has sold a stash of rare wines hidden away during the German occupation of the Channel Islands in World War II for 50,000 pounds (nearly $70,000).

Guernsey-based vintner Bucktrout & Co. placed the wines in a secret chamber between the company's shop and a loading area when the islands between France and England were overrun by Nazi forces.

The wines included eight bottles of Mouton Rothschild 1928 and two bottles of Chateau d'Yquem sauternes from 1934.

The bottles remained in the cellar after the end of the war but Bonhams said Wednesday that the owners sold the collection because they're moving to smaller quarters.
