Sunset magazine selects the best California tours for sparkling wine lovers
Sunset magazine is recommending the best sparkling wine tours in Napa and Sonoma, Calif.
The magazine's February issue recommends Domaine Carneros in Napa, a chateau owned by the French Champagne maker Taittinger; Domaine Chandon, a sister to Moet & Chandon, in Yountville; Mumm Napa, near Rutherford, related to the French Mumm brand; and Schramsberg Vineyards in Calistoga, which Sunset says ''pioneered top-quality sparkling wine'' in the area. Also on the list: Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards, owned by Freixenet, the Spanish sparkling wine producer; Iron Horse Vineyards near Sepastopol; and Korbel Champagne Cellars, in Guerneville.
Sunset magazine also picked Mumm Napa as site of the ''best basic sparkling-wine tour,'' Schramsberg's wine caves as the ''most fabulous winery feature,'' and David Munkgard of Iron Horse as ''most knowledgeable guide.'' Three shared ''loveliest setting'': Korbel, Iron Horse and Schramsberg.
