Ian crows at Dog Rock Winery

STONE the crows, here's a job worth raven about.

In a hilltop paddock with expansive (and expensive) views in all directions, former Croweater Ian Carman spends his days chasing the birds at a Crowlands vineyard near the Grampians in Victoria.

While some other nearby vineyards are installing wild and wonderful scarecrows, Ian works as a human version.

His daughter Andrea owns Dog Rock Winery, Crowlands, with her husband Allen Hart but both have day jobs off-farm, so Ian has taken on the role of keeping crows off Dog Rock's 6.5ha of vines.

"I have got a motorbike with a horn and a ute and I use metal bars and rods to make a lot of noise," he said.

After a scare the crafty crows land in nearby red gums or head to the other end of the farm.

"They disappear at the sight of the ute so I know I am doing my bit to help the winery business," he said.

For Ian, who previously worked as an Adelaide bus driver, the picturesque vineyard makes a nice change.

"When it's green it looks a million dollars," he said.

But as a loyal South Australian, Ian stresses that he doesn't hate all crows.

"There are crows I do like - the Adelaide Crows (football team) are the best crows around," he said.
