Wineries seek quality label
The number of wine growers signing up for Sustainable Winegrowing accreditation continues to increase with 1157 vineyards now accredited or working toward accreditation, a 69 per cent increase on June 2008 figures.
Of that figure, 583 Marlborough vineyards are accredited or working toward it, representing 15,166 hectares of grapeland.
Nationally, 25,864 hectares or 83 per cent of grapeland are accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing.
The quality assurance organisation aims to have all the country's vineyards accredited by 2012.
Of the wineries approved to use the Sustainable Winegrowing label, 126 now qualify, a 63 per cent increase on June last year.
The programme provides a framework for companies to improve environmental, social and economic sustainability in the vineyard and winery.
Members report their progress to the national body every year and are randomly audited every three years.
