Crisis manageable at this stage

German wine producers experienced losses in some export markets in 2008, but significant successes in other markets have largely compensated for this. Up to the end of last year, the economic crisis was particularly evident in exports to the USA and South Korea.
According to the German Wine Institute (Deutsches Weininstitut - DWI) exports of wine from Germany showed a positive development last year in spite of the difficult economic circumstances. Compared to the previous year, exports increased by eleven per cent to 427 million Euros, and volume sales increased by 14 per cent.
According to the DWI, the worldwide economic crisis is particularly evident in the US market and in South Korea. Following large increases in previous years, export sales to the USA Germany's most important market, decreased by eight per cent in 2008. These export losses were compensated by higher sales to the Netherlands, Russia and Belgium, for example. In addition, Norway, Denmark, Ireland and China also showed a positive development. The United Kingdom purchased a slightly smaller volume of wine, but at a higher average price. However, because of the weak Pound, prospects in this market are rather depressed.
In the years to come, the DWI will be increasingly focussing on promoting Pinot Noir, in addition to Riesling.
