Increased demand for Reservas in Germany

In spite of the worldwide economic crisis, Germany remains one of the most important export markets for wines from the renowned Rioja region. In particular mature wines are showing growth.
In 2008 Germany ranked second in Rioja export statistics, accounting for 17,22% of total volume sales. Nevertheless, a small decrease was recorded: compared to 2007, exports to Germany declined by 5,84%, corresponding to a volume of around 13,8 million litres of wine. On the other hand, value sales increased: here grwoth of 2.4% was recorded. The more mature types of Rioja are gaining in popularity. Although the young wines still account for the lion's share, Reservas in particular increased their sales volume in Germany by 52.28% in 2008, to three million litres.
