The Haw River Valley American Viticultural Area said Wednesday that it will receive the state’s third federally granted appellation, which includes six wineries.

The Haw River Valley AVA includes the northern and central portion of the state, encompassing Alamance County, as well as portions of Caswell, Chatham, Guilford, Orange and Rockingham counties. It will receive the designation April 29.

The wineries included in the region, which produces European vinifera and native muscadine grapes, are: Benjamin Vineyards Winery in Saxapahaw; GlenMarie Vineyards Winery in Burlington; Grove Winery Vineyards in Gibsonville; Iron Gate Vineyards Winery in Mebane; Silk Hope Winery in Silk Hope; and Wolfe Wines in Snow Camp.

Additionally, the Duplin Winery is the first muscadine winery, first state winery and first outside the West Coast wine region to receive the Adams Beverage Group Fast Track Brand Award and the Impact Hot Brands Award from M. Shanken and the Wine Spectator family of publications.
