Dining News: Chefs in Stride event to benefit Cancer Society
A new fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society, showcasing the work of local chefs from Gateway Market, Centro, Cafe Di Scala, Django, Glorious Desserts and others will has been scheduled for the evening of May 1 at the Village of Ponderosa.
Chefs in Stride will feature food, wine or beer as well as music, dancing, the Pink Girls of Estilo Salon and Day Spa and Miss Iowa, among others. Tickets are $50 and proceeds will go to fight breast cancer. For more information go to www.strideseve.com or call 727-0048.
Experience spring luau at Tournament Club of Iowa
The Tournament Club of Iowa has scheduled first spring luau with hula dancers for Saturday. Chef Ephraim Malag is planning a menu with kalua pork, lomi lomi salmon, manapua, pupus and other items. Seating time begins at 6 p.m., with a dinner and show later.

Asian, American foods featured at newly opened Clive buffet
Hickman Buffet, 8900 Hickman Rd., Clive, is now open. The eatery features Asian and American food and is located in the building where a steak house and Chinese buffet were previously. The restaurant also includes a sushi bar.

Christopher's Sunday brunch
Christopher's Restaurant, 2816 Beaver Ave., is now offering a regular Sunday brunch special. Served from 10 a.m.-2 p.m, the brunch features scrambled eggs with cheeses, breakfast meats, huevos con chorizo, French toast, chicken parmigiana, and assorted specialty desserts. Meats will vary every week.

Jethro's BBQ noted in book
The authors of "America's Best BBQ,'' a cookbook scheduled to be released next month, mention only one Iowa restaurant in their book - Jethro's BBQ, 3102 Forest Ave. Ardie Davis and Paul Kirk, who considered 8,000 restaurants, according to a media release, were impressed with the Des Moines restaurant.
"Ardie's college roommate, The Rev. Ron Osborne, told us about this place, and we're glad he did!,'' Kirk wrote. "Try the baby backs with Carolina sauce and the smoked chicken with Alabama white sauce. If you guessed from the name that the joint and menu are built on a hillbilly theme, you guessed right.''
Event features beer, wine tasting at Grimes' Gortz Haus
The Gortz Haus Gallery, an art gallery and frame shoppe, flower shoppe, and bistro at 408 First St., Grimes, will offer a beer and wine tasting from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday. Samples from several Iowa vendors will be featured. Reservations suggested. $15 per person, $25 per couple. Call 986-3340.
