Hundreds turn out for Wine & Wishes
The fourth annual Wine and Wishes, a benefit for Akron Children's Hospital, was held Friday evening at Tangier restaurant in Akron.
More than 500 guests tasted fine wines, craft beer and gourmet food samples throughout the evening.
Bob Heller was chairperson for the evening.
Attendees could bid on a wide array of items, including sports memorabilia and gift baskets.
''We've really expanded the live auction and for the first time participants can bid on a flight in the hospital's Air Bear helicopter,'' said Pam Holtz, director of foundation marketing.
Laci Hendress, Brian Hollingsworth and Jen Gump welcomed guests. Elaine Heinzerling carried a toy poodle donated by Pet's Pajamas.
''The food here is phenomenal and the wine is upscale,'' said Marty Student, who attended with his wife, Carla.
Tiffany and Greg Michalec brought pictures of their twins, Katie and Cory, who were born at 26 weeks. The Michalecs, who started Wine and Wishes in 2006, told the story of the family's experience with the hospital's neonatal care.
Tiffany Msafiri said, ''I understand the struggle to not know if your baby is going to make it from one moment to the next.'' Other mothers such as Beth Snyder agreed.
Giant Eagle, one of the event's sponsors, was responsible for the food. ''It takes a lot of planning and a staff of five chefs to put this together,'' said Giant Eagle Chef Tim Monsma.
Fred Zumpano was attending for the first time and wanted to bid on the sports items.
Vicki and John LaGuardia were looking forward to sampling the wines. Steve and Marcha French brought their longtime friends Heather Weitzel and David Hill.
Bob Hale served as the auctioneer for the evening and Shawn Lyden was the guest speaker.
