The organisers of the ProWein trade fair, which has just ended in Düsseldorf, claim they are very satisfied with the number of visitors recorded this year.

In spite of the international economic situation, the international wine and spirits business remains defiantly optimistic. The trade fair ended on 31st March, chalking up a significant growth of 5 per cent in the number of visitors recorded. In total, 35.000 trade visitors from around the world attended. It was noted that the international component showed particularly good growth, up by 12.3 per cent, with the biggest growth this year coming from the USA, Scandinavia, the Benelux, Switzerland and Slovenia. The focus was on topics such as cool climate - wines with a moderate alcohol content, the 350th anniversary of the Silvaner grape variety as well as vintage cocktails. The interest in organic wines remains very high.

This year, a total of 3.180 exhibitors from around the world availed themselves of the opportunity of showing their wares at ProWein. The classical European growing regions were present, as were newcomers such as Algeria and Egypt. „The ProWein 2009 exceeded all expectations, and this is an indicator that there is still relative stability in consumer product categories“, says Wilhelm Niedergöker, chief executive of the Messe Düsseldorf, the organisers.
