2008 China Wine Industry Report

Statistics from Yantai Food Institute showed that wine production of China in 2008 rosed by 23.83% year on year, to 6.393 million hl. The gross value of output has reached 19.168 billion yuan, up 27.02% comparing with 2007.
 

 
The wine yield all over China in 2007 increased by 37% than a year earlier. Wine production of Shandong province has reached 2.809 million hl last year, jumped by 16% from 2007.
 
Chen shou sheng, spokesman of the Institute, said that today there are 107 up-scaled wine enterprises in China, 51 of which in Shandong province.Yantai (Shandong province) region has 37 up-scaled wine enterprises.
 
The value of wine output in Yantai amounted to 9.364 billion yuan last year, which accounts for 48.85% of China’s total wine output value.
 
The total Chinese wine exports decreased by 32.4% in volume terms, to  7.3495 million liters last year. The sparkling wine exports increased 23.63% (reaching 322.8 thousand liters) in terms of volume and down 24.6% (reaching 2.3999 million dollars) in terms of value compared with 2007.
 
Chinese bottled wine sales abroad reduced by 34.7% in 2008 to reach 17.4812 million dollars. Exports of bottled wine slumped 44.72% , to 4.747 million liters .
 
Chinese wine imports jumped 10.73%( to 182.1 million liters) in terms of volume and 41.58% (to 873 million dollars) in terms of value.
 
According to the latest research from Vinexpo, China will become the seventh biggest wine consuming country in the world by 2012, with wine consumption expected to rise 36% to 1 billion bottles.
 
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu are the leading wine consumption cities in China mainland. France is still the largest source country of China’s wine imports.
