Portuguese wine offers a flavorful and affordable option for any meal .

New york, NY -- Portugal has again landed in the U.S. Customs' list of top 10 wine exporters to the United States. In the first 10 months of 2008, Portugal exported more than $56 million in wine to America, making it the ninth largest exporter and beating out 10th place South Africa.

Although Portuguese wines are not as widely known in America as those from other European countries, they've been popping up at wine retailers across the country. Portugal has made fine Port wines for centuries, but a relatively recent government investment in modernizing the wine industry and an influx of young talent inspired many of the region's winemakers to expand their operations beyond Port.

"The reason I continue to scream about Portugal's amazing quality is because when I taste wines like the J. Portugal Ramos Vila Santa Red, it reminds me that it would cots $40 from any other place in the world, and I...can offer it to my clients for $16," writes Gary Vaynerchuk, Wine Library Director of Operations and Star of Wine Library TV.

The scenic Douro River valley in central Portugal, which celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2006, is known for its bold flavored and full-bodied red wines. The Dao region produces reds that are strong, deep in color and full-bodied, and whites that are aromatic and fruity. The Minho region is known for its vinho verdes wines, considered to be Portugal's best whites and the Bairrada region is recognized for producing a unique and flavor-packed sparkling red.

Portuguese wines are versatile and with a wide variety of flavors, there is a wine to pair with nearly every dish. The reds are well-matched with lamb, steaks and pork, but are also tasty with poultry dishes. Refreshing and crisp, the whites go well with grilled fish, salads and other summery foods, as well as steaky fish like swordfish or tuna.

Portuguese wines have also earned the reputation for offering top quality at an affordable price, making them accessible to casual wine drinkers and aficionados alike. A number of bottles are available for around $10, including Casa de Vila Verde which sells for about $8, Quinta do Casal for $10 and Alveda for $14.
