The Vegetable Industry
Formerly known as the "produce industry", vegetable transportation industry serves as a bridge connecting vegetable suppliers with the masses of consumers.
Vegetable farmers grow and gather their crops at proper times according to the vegetable species, the weather and the season. As the growing cycles vary, different vegetables can be planted in alternation. Chinese cabbage is grown about four times a year and small Chinese cabbage can be planted and gathered for three or four times during summer and autumn. Other vegetables are mostly sowed in one season and gathered in the next, with no breaks in all four seasons. The hard work of farmers brings fresh and tender vegetables to the people.
Local vegetable dealers purchase vegetables from farmers and then transport to urban "produce shops", from which the vegetables are distributed to the market.
Vegetable farmers also carry their produce in baskets to sell on a stall from dawn to noon. Vegetable peddlers going from one street to another are traditionally called "big basket carriers".
