ST. PAUL, Minn. - Wines from the frosty north are being showcased in St. Paul.
Thirty commercial wineries from 16 states have entered about 315 wines in the first International Cold Climate Wine Competition, part of the Minnesota State Fair.
Organizers hope the recognition will not only pique consumer interest, but encourage professional winemakers to produce better wines.
Tom Martell, president of the Minnesota Grape Growers Association, says the quality of wines produced in cold states has improved considerably in recent years. Minnesota alone now has over 30 wineries.
Judging is expected to wrap up late Tuesday. Awards will be issued in several categories, and the top Minnesota winery in the competition will get the Governor's Cup.
