Japan Airlines is stepping up its game in the race to go green with the introduction of PET bottled wine. This wine will be served on one of the Japan Airlines Eco Jet aircraft, which is decorated with a very special “green” design to help promote environmental awareness. This will be the second eco jet that Japan Airlines has launched.
This new service, which will one day be introduced on all international routes, will start up on August 6, 2009. The first flight that will feature this bottled wine will be flight JL403 from Tokyo to London.
One thing that makes PET bottled wine so friendly to the environment, and one of the reasons why Japan Airlines chose to use it, is because the wine will be bottled in recyclable PET bottles that look almost identical to the original glass packaging. However, they will have 22 grams each and are one seventh the weight of glass bottles that are similarly sized.
Switching to using PET wine bottles on the plane will help in reducing the overall weight of the aircraft, which in turn will help to reduce the fuel consumption of the aircraft, and thus, help to reduce CO2 emissions. All of this will be done without compromising the integrity and the flavor of the wine on the plane.
When the wine is finished on the Japan Airlines flights, the PET bottles are then collected and recycled. This makes using PET bottles instead of glass bottles a much more ecological choice. This is just a small step in the direction that Japan Airlines would like to take its company.
