New Paul Cluver Gewürztraminer released
The much-desired Paul Cluver Gewürztraminer is being released into chosen stores, giving consumers the chance to taste the 2009 vintage of this coveted wine that is fêted for its delicious aromatic style.
Produced from grapes harvested on the slopes of the cool Elgin mountains, and fermented with various strains of yeast, the new and limited vintage is one that has a pleasing balance between fruit and clean acidity, with litchi, Turkish delight and rose petals on the nose and palate.
"A unique selling point is that it has become accepted as a choice of wine and food connoisseurs to partner Asian and spicy food because its dry style sets off the food perfectly," says winemaker Andries Burger. Its dazzling floral flavours, and slight touch of sugar, particularly enhance zesty cuisine or dishes with coconut milk. "But," he adds, "don't let that limit you - it's exceptionally good with any white meat from fish to poultry and pork, as well as salads, vegetable dishes. Or do what we do - treat yourself to a glass or two, chilled, just for the pleasure of sipping something so sensational."
"Hints of jasmine and honeysuckle tantalize in the background, with all the fruits carrying through to the palate. It's a wine with an astounding balance, with interesting interplay between the residual sugar and acidity and a texture and mouth feel that makes the consumer want more," he says.
The Cluvers have been making Gewürztraminer on the farm since 1996 from grapes planted a decade before and have achieved many awards for the cultivar over the years. These include 4½ stars in Platter to 88 points in Wine Spectator and Diner's Club selections.
