Pernod Ricard UK is to launch Jacob’s Creek wines in 50cl bottles, after the group's consumer research showed demand is rising for smaller bottle sizes.
Pernod's UK division said today (14 September) that it is launching 50cl versions of its Jacob's Creek Three Vines range, to be available from now and priced at GBP4.99 (US$8.2).
The move follows consumer research, completed by UK-based agency Wine Intelligence for Pernod, that shows rising demand for 50cl bottles as an alternative to the traditional 75cl size.
More than one in five consumers surveyed said they would prefer a 50cl bottle to a bag-in-box, wine pouch or 25cl single serve bottle, Pernod said. Nearly half of those questioned said they would cosider purchasing a 50cl bottle.
"Through our consumer research we have established that consumers are eager to purchase a smaller bottle of wine from a brand they can trust," said Nick Blair, outgoing wine director at Pernod Ricard UK.
"Those who fancy a couple of glasses of wine, but would rather not finish a full bottle, or consumers looking for a for a unique wine great to pair with a home-cooked dinner for two, now have a solution with Jacob's Creek Three Vines 50cl."
Last month, Chilean wine firm Vina Concha Y Toro announced the launch of its own wines 50cl bottles in the UK.
Pernod's Jacob's Creek brand saw worldwide volume sales slip 2% in the group's most recent fiscal year, to the end of June. Value sales were flat against the year before.
However, the Three Vines range, which includes a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc Viognier, Shiraz Grenache Sangiovese and Shiraz Cabernet Tempranillo, is showing strong double-digit year-on-year growth in the UK, the firm said.
