Some provinces in China such as Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujlan, Yunnan and Guizhou are famous tea-producing areas, each boasting their own specialty. Examples are the common Liu'an tea of Anhui, West Lake Dragon-well tea of Zhejiang, "Green snail" of Jiangsu, "Iron Guanyin" tea of Fujian, and Pu'er tea of Yunnan.

Different ways of baking gives rise to separate categories of tea, such as flower teas, green teas, black teas or brick teas, each again divided into 10 to 20 sub-categories. The two characters "Mao Jian" written on this illustrated teashop sign implies an excellent type of tea. It is made by baking tender leaves, carefully picked from premium tea trees, through specialized processes. In this category, the "Mao Jian" teas produced in Liu'an, Anhui, in Xinyang, Henan, and in Duyun, Guizhou, are some of the best.

Teashop signs are mostly with written characters. In other words, they are made of one or several square boards written with the names of the teas in front of the shops.
