Kiwi’s love home-grown wine best reveals survey: NZL
By New Zealanders prefer wine produced on home soil, reveals a nationwide ‘Kiwi Wine Habits’ survey commissioned by the Liquorland Top 100.
A whopping 91 per cent of the 1700 survey respondents said they would chose wine made in NZ over wine produced overseas.
However, more than a third (37.4 per cent) of respondents don’t mind what NZ region the wine comes from, as long as it tastes good.
Director of the Liquorland Top 100, wine consultant Belinda Jackson, said she is not surprised Kiwis prefer wine grown in NZ.
“New Zealand is known internationally for producing top quality wine of all varieties and many of our local wines are sought after by wine lovers and restaurateurs across the globe,” she said.
“In 2008 New Zealand wines took out a high proportion of awards at the Liquorland Top 100 and this year we have again seen a number of top quality local wines entered into the competition.”
The survey also reveals that Sauvignon Blanc is the most popular wine choice, with 87.1 per cent of Kiwis saying they have tried Sauvignon Blanc. This was closely followed by 86.8 per cent who have tried Chardonnay.
However it seems Kiwis aren’t very adventurous with their wine choices, with only 17.6 per cent of respondents having tried Chenin Blanc and only 22.9 per cent having tried Viognier.
“New Zealanders generally tend to stick to wines they know such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay rather than the more exotic varieties,” said Jackson.
“The Liquorland Top 100 includes wines across 20 different wine classes, so it’s a good reason for consumers to branch out and sample a new variety which has received the judges’ endorsement.”
The Top 100 independently endorsed wines will be announced 2 October at an awards evening in Auckland. @ 9:36 AM 0 Comments Retailing_Features
