Four Major Elements

Hong Kong Food and Wine Year Spotlight Events will last for 10 days, from 30 October (Friday) to 8 November (Sunday), and will include the following four major elements: 

1. Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival (30 October – 1 November) 
2. Street Carnivals (6 – 8 November) 
3. Food District Promotions, Hotel and Dining Offers (30 October – 8 November) 
4. Food and Wine Themed Activities (30 October – 8 November)

Programme Details

1. Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival – first-ever, large-scale, outdoor food and wine event

• On 31 October (Saturday) and 1 November (Sunday), free shuttle bus services will be provided to the venue from three MTR stations MTR Kowloon Station exit A (from 12:55 pm), East Tsim Sha Tsui Station exit K (from 12:45 pm), and Hung Hom Station exit C2 (from 12:40 pm), all until around 9:00 pm.
• Headway: approximately 10 minutes.
• Free shuttle bus service will be provided from the venue to the above three stations.

Wine Pass: Original Price HK$150 (special price HK$120 for American Express cardmembers), which includes:

• 12 wine coupons (the holder can enjoy wine tasting, each about 40 ml, from a choice of 12 wine booths out of all participating wine booths*)
• A HK$10 cash coupon (applicable to all wine and food booths inside the venue)
• A GODIVA chocolate (sample size) gift coupon
• A Tsit Wing coffee (sample size) gift coupon
• An official wristband*
• A goodie bag, consisting of a Riedel wine glass (worth HK$135, for wine tasting in the venue) and a bottle of Waiwera Mineral Water from New Zealand.

Wine Token: HK$10 for one wine tasting, about 40 ml each (token holders must have an official stamp on the back of their hand*)


* Wine-tasting participants must be aged 18 or above and must wear the official wristband or bear the official stamp for identification. The HKTB reserves the right to require buyers of wine passes / wine tokens to show their documents of identity. Individuals who wish to taste wine at the venue must wear the wristband obtained upon purchase of their wine pass / tokens for identification.

• MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station / Kowloon Station (from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, 20 – 29 October)
• MTR Travel at Hung Hom Station (from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, 20 October – 1 November)
• HKTB Visitor Centre at Star Ferry Concourse, Tsim Sha Tsui (8:00 am to 8:00 pm, 20 October – 1 November)

Individuals who purchase wine passes from 20 – 29 October at the above- mentioned MTR stations can enjoy a special price of HK$130 (original price HK$150).  Cash is not accepted for purchase of wine passes at the MTR Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon stations.

American Express cardmembers can enjoy the privilege price of HK$120 by using an American Express Card when purchasing wine passes at MTR Kowloon / East Tsim Sha Tsui Stations, and the HKTB Visitor Centre at the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Concourse.

• Visitors and local residents can also purchase wine passes / wine tokens on site during the three-day festival.
• A total of 13,000 wine passes will be available for on-site and pre-event purchase.

 

Booths Over 150 booths will provide food and wine from all over the world and exhibit wine paraphernalia. Wine and food pairing tips will also be provided.

• Over 100 wine booths will showcase various wine offerings from 15 countries, including “old world” and “new world” countries: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States, France (Bordeaux and other regions), Germany, Italy, Macedonia, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland.

• About 50 food booths will offer sampling of award-winning dishes, Western, European and Asian cuisines, and local specialties, such as winning dishes of the “Best of the Best Culinary Awards”, Bordeaux tasting plates, Sichuan cuisine, Cantonese BBQ food, seafood, Italian and Southeast Asian cuisines, and a variety of local delicacies.

• Wine, food and non-alcoholic drinks can be purchased on site directly from booths.

* Bottled wines purchased at the festival should not be consumed or  opened on site.
Live Entertainment Hong Kong’s first outdoor 3D multimedia show, along with a live show with different themes, will be presented every night.

• Hong Kong’s First Outdoor Multimedia Lighting and Sound Show
   An outdoor 3D multimedia show will be presented every half hour from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. (5 sessions, approximately 5 minutes per session)

• Live Performance
Live performances with jazz and singing will be featured on all three nights with three different themes: “Jazz under the Hong Kong Sky”, “This is Halloween” and “Jazz up tonight”. Singers and professional bands will take turns to perform every night.

Wine Talk
 A number of wine talks will be conducted from 1:30 pm to 10:00 pm on 31 October and 1 November. Speakers from the Bordeaux Wine Council, Hong Kong Management Association, Hong Kong Sommelier Association, Kampery Development Ltd and the Open University of Hong Kong will share with participants their professional tips on different aspects of wine, as well as pairing of wine and wine paraphernalia. 


Participants are also welcome to join a “Wine Clinic”, and bring along their own vintage which they would like to be examined by professional sommeliers.  (For the schedule of wine classes, please refer to Annex 2.)

• Some quotas for wine classes will be reserved for online-registration. Interested parties can find details on the “Hong Kong Food and Wine Year Spotlight Events” website. Online registration will start on 20 October.

Kids Culinary Workshop Culinary workshops designed for children on the preparation of Western-style cakes and desserts will be conducted under the guidance of representatives from the Hong Kong Chefs Association and Hong Kong Young Chefs Club.

Installation art piece and painting on wine bottles “Box and the City”, an art installation, constructed with 400 large wine cases by famous local artist Miss Eileen Chan, will be displayed. Visitors who are interested can also learn to paint on wine bottles under the guidance of instructors for free. Outstanding works will be displayed at the venue. 

Antique car show The Collectors Car Club of Hong Kong Ltd will display five antique cars every day.


• The “Hong Kong Food and Wine Year Spotlight Events” are supported by approximately 50 different organisations and government departments. (Please refer to Annex 3.)


 2.  Street Carnivals

Lan Kwai Fong and SoHo will each host a three-day street carnival with a different theme. Both areas will have roads closed for street decoration and performances. A total of 130 booths will be set up, with 80 in Lan Kwai Fong and 50 in SoHo.

• During the SoHo Wine and Dine Carnival, more than 40 participating SoHo outlets will offer food-and-wine-pairing menus for visitors and local residents at a special price of HK$50.

o Wine Talk

 “Taste Hong Kong” Pass (for visitors)
Visitors can purchase a HK$150 “Taste Hong Kong” pass, which entitles them to one drink at each of any four bars (out of eight) during Happy Hour (5:00 pm-9:00 pm) in one night.

To Taste the World of Wines at about 50 restaurants in SoHo, wine lovers can get a set of 6 tickets for only HK$100 and enjoy six glasses of specially selected wines (half portion) from their preferred countries at participating restaurants from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm, 4 November. (A maximum of two tickets to be used in each restaurant)

o Free Corkage (for visitors)
 During the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Spotlight Events period, 49 restaurants from 18 hotels will waive corkage fees (City Garden Hotel, Hong Kong Cosmopolitan Hotel, Harbour Grand Hong Kong Hotel, Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel, Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel, Hotel Jen, Hong Kong Island Pacific Hotel, Luk Kwok Hotel, Regal Riverside Hotel, Hong Kong Renaissance Harbour View Hotel, Royal Park Hotel, Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel, The Charterhouse Causeway Bay Hotel, The Cityview Hong Kong Hotel, Hong Kong Excelsior Hotel, The Harbour View Hong Kong, Park Lane Hotel and The Royal Pacific Hotel).

o Wine Buffet (for visitors and local residents)
 Three hotels (The Royal Park Hotel, The Charterhouse Causeway Bay Hotel and W Hotel Hong Kong) will offer wine buffets for visitors and local residents in October and November, and offer unlimited drinks from a pre-set wine list, together with snacks and canapés at a fixed price.
 Sail to Lamma Island and enjoy a Chinese seafood dinner, which includes Best of the Best award-winning dishes at the Rainbow Seafood Restaurant, a delightful waterfront restaurant. During the dinner, guests may choose to pay an additional HK$150 for a one-hour wine buffet.

o Food District Promotion (for visitors)
To support the “Hong Kong Food and Wine Year Spotlight Events”, from 1 October 2009 to 10 January 2010, various restaurants at key food districts will provide fabulous dining offers for visitors. Visitors with coupons featured in the “Hong Kong Wine and Dine Offers” booklet, available at HKTB Visitor Centres and ports of entry, can enjoy the special offers.

4. Food and Wine Themed Activities
The travel trade will promote the following food and wine themed activities alongside the Hong Kong Food and Wine Spotlight Events. Interested visitors and locals can register to participate in these activities with the relevant organisers.

o Wine Appreciation Classes (for visitors and local residents)
Visitors can join classes conducted by local sommeliers. Visitors will be guided through the tasting of excellent wines, while the sommeliers will share interesting stories about grapes, vineyards and châteaux. Tips on wine varieties, prices, tasting and production methods will be featured with specialised instruction pertaining to wine language, tasting techniques and food pairings.

 Chef’s Table (for visitors and local residents)
  Participating hotels (Four Seasons Hong Kong, The Mira Hong Kong and Harbour Grand Hong Kong) will offer an exclusive gourmet experience for small groups of four to six people, where hotel chefs will showcase their culinary skills through cooking demonstrations and participants can enjoy the first taste when the dish is completed.

Three local restaurants, the Super Star Seafood Restaurant, the Alcove Simple Gourmet Studio and Towngas Avenue, will organise cooking classes for visitors and local residents featuring dim sum, Chinese dumplings and specially designed dishes with wine element respectively.

o Wine Cellar Tour (for visitors)
 A tour to a wine cellar located in Shouson Hill on the south side of Hong Kong Island.
The wine cellars were constructed more than 70 years ago by the British Military to
serve as an ammunition and weapons storage depot in preparation for World War II.
Participants can enjoy food and wine in the cellar after the tour.

Publicity and Promotion Overseas

• The HKTB will leverage various channels to promote “Hong Kong Food and Wine Year Spotlight Events” and Hong Kong’s diverse selection of food and wine travel trade to overseas media, travel trade and consumers from various source markets. ,

o Collaborate with trade partners to launch package tours and itineraries
 Launched “Celebrity Gourmet Tours” in Japan, Singapore and Taiwan.

- Food Critic Moses Lim (Singapore)

 In various source markets, including the Mainland, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Canada and Australia, the HKTB is co-operating with its travel-trade partners, such as major travel agencies and airlines, to launch package tours and itineraries themed on the food and wine offerings in Hong Kong.

o Organise familiarisation tours for the trade and media from different source markets
 Approximately 130 media representatives from 17 source markets were invited to visit Hong Kong and participate in the “Hong Kong Food and Wine Year Spotlight Events”, as well as to experience a full range of culinary delights in the city. They include Super Taste Magazine from Taiwan, Croissant Premium Magazine from Japan, “Newsis” from South Korea, “Asian Food Channel” from Southeast Asia, CNBC from the United States, The Vancouver Sun from Canada, Gourmet Traveller Wine from Australia, Timeout Magazine from the United Kingdom, Sud Quest from France, FAZ from Germany and Weekend Viaggi from Italy, to name a few.

 Over 100 travel-trade members from various source markets, such as Mainland China, Taiwan, India, Canada, Australia, Japan and the United States, were invited to come to Hong Kong to experience the city’s wide selection of food and wine, and to provide them with a greater incentive to develop more travel packages and itineraries themed on Hong Kong’s food and wine.

 “Hong Kong Food and Wine Year Spotlight Events” were promoted to travel-trade partners and consumers in short-haul markets, such as Mainland China, India, Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, through various trade and consumer activities, including the PATA trade fair, trade briefings and familiarisation tours, to name a few.

o Invite renowned food critics to promote Hong Kong’s unique culinary experience
 Local food critics, including Mr Walter Kei, Ms Maria Cordero and Michelin Chef Mr Alvin Leung were invited to go to various source markets, such as Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia to promote Hong Kong’s diverse culinary experiences to overseas media, trade representatives and consumers.

 Influential wine bloggers from Taiwan, namely Clara, Thomas and Eric, as well as renowned food writer Miss Yeh Yilan, were invited to come to Hong Kong to experience the food and wine of the city, and share their experience and recommendations about Hong Kong food and wine with other netizens on blogs and websites.

o Leverage the peak exhibition season and promotie Hong Kong to MICE visitors
 Leveraging the peak exhibition season in October and November, the Spotlight Events were promoted to in-town MICE visitors through HKTB’s Worldwide Offices, the Internet and MICE trade activities. Complimentary wine passes for the “Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival”, “Taste Hong Kong” passes, cooking classes and wine cellar tours are also being provided to MICE visitors attending meetings and incentives activities in Hong Kong, enticing them to further experience the delectable dining experience in Hong Kong.
